Dr. James sits down with Dr. Mark Tommerdahl, creator of the Brain Gauge, to share how a simple vibration on your fingertips can measure your brain’s health in real time. Discover why most neurologic assessments fall short and how this technology is changing both recovery and prevention.
Brain Gauge Home
Our patients have responded so well to Brain Gauge in the clinic that many wanted it at home for their families. Now you can. This is the same research-grade brain health test we use every day, built to track how your mind evolves over time. Quick, engaging, and insightful, it offers unlimited testing for up to five people.
If you’re a Concierge member visiting one of our clinic locations, you’ll have access to it anytime.
Our brain quietly shapes every part of our lives, from how quickly you solve problems to how deeply you sleep at night. But unlike a pulled muscle or a broken bone, it’s harder to know when your brain isn’t at its best.
Brain Gauge changes that. In just a few minutes, this non-invasive assessment uses gentle, touch-based sensory testing to measure eight pillars of brain performance: speed, focus, fatigue, accuracy, sequencing, timing perception, plasticity, and connectivity. The result is a clear, easy-to-follow snapshot of your cognitive health, so subtle changes don’t go unnoticed.
It’s not just for recovery after an injury. Tracking your brain health over time can help you spot patterns, measure progress, and take preventative steps. The earlier you understand your brain, the better you can care for it.
During each test, those two orange tips will ‘buzz’ your fingers in a specific way. Our free app will ask questions about what you felt, and then analyze your responses using clinically-proven neuroscience. In less than 15 minutes you can complete a comprehensive brain health assessment and gain valuable insight into your mental fitness.

Brain health affects everything—from how you think and focus to how you remember, react, and process the world around you. Subtle changes can happen gradually, sometimes without obvious symptoms, which is why measuring can be valuable at any stage of life.
This assessment can be helpful if you’ve had a concussion or head injury, notice brain fog or fatigue, are recovering from long COVID or another illness, play contact sports, or just want to understand how your brain is functioning as you age.
It’s also a useful baseline for anyone who wants to track changes in their cognitive health over time.

The Brain Gauge app will run on any PC with Windows 8+, or any Mac with MacOS 10.10+. You will also need one available USB port.

The Brain Gauge is kind of like a "thermometer" for your brain. Unlike other web-based cognitive tests - which can be influenced by IQ, memory, education, and cultural factors - Brain Gauge directly measures your brain's essential physiological functions.
Rather than measuring your ability to perform critical thinking tasks, we measure the foundational elements of brain health. Thermometers can tell you when your body temperature is outside the normal range, but without further examination they can't explain why you have a fever. Likewise, Brain Gauge can show you when your brain is functioning at its best, and when you might need to see a specialist or make lifestyle changes to optimize your cognitive performance.

Brain Gauge has its own replacement policy, which is handled directly through their team. If your device stops working, you can send it back to them for a replacement at no cost. If it’s lost, a new device can be purchased for $99.
All replacements must be coordinated directly with Brain Gauge at support@corticalmetrics.com, as James Clinic does not manage this process. -
You should be able to use your HSA card for this purchase, but it's best to confirm with your insurance provider first as each insurer has different requirements.
